Post Updated: November 24, 2015 (changes are italicized.) In my opinion, the goal of education is to lead young adults to becoming competent members of society with a deep understanding of themselves and the world around them. I hope the students in my classroom learn valuable aspects of character education (like perseverance, respect, acceptance and responsibility), the necessary skills to achieve academically (like higher-order thinking, independence and meeting standards set) and the importance of art and expression in education. Through my initial internship, my beliefs in the importance of art in education are reaffirmed. Young students are delighted to include illustrations and multi-modal art in their work, which has increased engagement during core subjects like science and math. I have seen lower-achieving and language impaired students further express their communication abilities and learning through artistic creativity. Students learn by engagement in a curriculum that is presented in a variety of ways to appeal to all learning styles, as shown through their application of the knowledge being taught. I expect students to challenge me to become a better teacher by contributing their unique needs and perspectives, while giving their best efforts, that encourage me to tailor my teaching methods and ideologies. I hope that students enjoy learning and succeed in their individual goals, desires and passions. After students leave my classroom, I hope to hear that they have become lifelong learners as a result of their positive experiences in early education. The context of where you teach influences the accessible materials available for instruction, as well as the local expectations and culture of the background from which your students were raised. In order to determine the outcome of a lesson, student response (verbal or behavioral indications) , comprehension (measured by application or questioning) and attitude toward the material can imply success or failure in learning. After working with a diverse group of kindergartners, I believe it is important to consider the students' personal strengths and weaknesses during assessment. Young students have varying levels of language proficiency and may not have developed the communication tools to adequately adhere to traditional testing. Therefore, the best way to measure student learning rests in application of what is being taught. We began developing our Initial Teaching Platforms on August 27th, 2015 by collaborating with a cohort member.
