Math: 16 & 17
Reflection-After my previous lesson, I was proud to see my procedure of dismissing students from the carpet one table color at a time as an effective behavior management strategy. I was surprised at the complexity of ensuring each student got a turn to participate in all the activities at least once. Kindergartners are eager to help and be involved, so it's important to ensure they all feel included and are given equal opportunity to learn. The students were able to complete the specified worksheet pages independently, so I believe they grasped the concept of the numbers. I was impressed by one student's ability to find the correct set of 16 quickly. Instead of counting individual markers, she was able to see the set as a whole or quickly group the counters. Each student seemed to of mastered the numerical order of counting and grasped the concept of having ten ones and six/seven additional ones. That will build their foundational knowledge for learning place value. I believe that learners of various styles were considered in this lesson. There were chimes, songs and familiar character voices in the Curious George lesson. Visual learners are offered an opportunity to grasp the numerical concept through the set, tens frames and tallies. However, I'd like to include an activity that will better engage kinesthetic learners. Individual, whole class and group work supported collaborative peer learning. Moving forward, I believe the number posters should be continued as well as utilizing technology available to further student engagement. Overall, I was proud of my class for their participation and evident comprehension.
